Barada is the river that runs through Damascus, and also through an oasis of gardens and orchards known as Ghouta. This design is our homage to the river.
Many of the women we work with are originally from the Ghouta area and knew the Barada as children. This cushion, like the river of old, brings life: it brings financial security to a woman who relies on it to feed her children.
Like all Oshana pieces, it is made by Syrian refugee women who were forced to flee their homes due to the war, leaving everything behind. The women we work with now live in Lebanon, where there are no bombs, but where over 90% of refugees lack the money to buy enough food, according to the UN. Oshana provides a crucial and dignified income.
