We love to take inspiration from our Middle Eastern heritage, and this design is based upon a fragment of embroidery dating back to Ottoman times.
All of our pieces are made by Syrian refugee women artisans. Every stitch is picked out minutely by hand, just as it would have been in Ottoman times, keeping this craft heritage alive. Not a machine in sight.
In the words of Aziza, one of our artisans, who lost her home in Syria due to the war and now lives in Lebanon:
‘In Syria, I used to watch my mother and grandmother doing embroidery. Now this work reminds me of them.
‘Oshana means a lot to me, it’s not just helping me financially but it gives me a community and I made friends, we always look forward to meeting and seeing each other. We tell each other our stories and empty our hearts to each other. This has helped us, really so much.’
We have named this cushion Aziza after her, and in honour of her mother, grandmother, and the long line of women stretching back from our artisans to their Ottoman great-grandmothers.
