Joan Hecktermann x Oshana

Oshana is the old Arabic (Aramaic, in fact) word for palm tree – and that is the inspiration for this vibrant piece, part of our collaboration with designer and stylist Joan Hecktermann.

In traditional Middle Eastern embroidery, the palm is the symbol of life itself. They were the only trees that could grow in the desert. Their dates gave sweetness, and their shade offered shelter.

Our cushions are hand-embroidered by Syrian women who have been forced to leave their homes due to the current conflict, now living in Lebanon, where daily survival as a refugee is incredibly hard.

The Palmyra Palm cushion, like the palms of old, gives life. It provides dignified work that enables Syrian women to put food on the table and rooves over their children’s head - sweetness and shelter of another, equally important, variety.

Specifications

40×40cm

Cotton embroidery thread on linen and cotton backing.

Can be machine washed - just cool wash on a delicates cycle.

Does not include cushion pad.
