Shubbak means ‘window’ in Arabic, but originally it referred to an intricate lattice-worked screen that let the breeze in while allowing privacy. The beautiful patterns on this cushion reminded us of the lattices you can still see in old houses, which is how this piece got its name.
The concept of the Shubbak has also become a rich metaphor in Arabic literature and music — a window as a symbol of longing, opportunity, or a boundary between private and outside world. There's a common expression fatah al-shubbak ("open the window") meaning to welcome new opportunities.
Many of the women who practice embroidery with Oshana tell us that this work has opened the windows of their lives. At the most basic level, it has got them out of the house. It has also provided the opportunity to work and earn an independent income, building new lives in dignity and community.
