Yarmouk embroidered cushion - multicoloured

£85.00

PRE-ORDER - TAKES UP TO FOUR WEEKS TO DELIVER.

Like all of our work, this cushion is hand-embroidered by Syrian refugee women. This one is particularly intricately embroidered, and takes weeks to complete. It provides a family with rent, food and school fees for a whole month.

The pattern is inspired by ancient Palestinian embroidery patterns. We called it Yarmouk in recognition of the Yarmouk area in Damascus which served as a home for Palestinian refugees in Syria. Before the conflict, Yarmouk was a happy, busy area with lots of shops and restaurants. Now, it is barely recognisable. Some of the artisans we work with are Syrian Palestinian women from Yarmouk. Now, they have been displaced once again.

Embroidery in the Levant is a skill passed down through the generations- grandmother to daughter, daughter to granddaughter, and so on. It is seen as vital to the both Palestinian and Syrian identity, used both to decorate homes and for income generation.

Levantine embroidery displays an extraordinary boldness and richness in both pattern and colour, and is always hand-stitched.

This is the heritage that our Syrian and Palestinian women artisans keep alive through their work today - each and every stitch sewn by hand.
