Cypress of the Levant hand-embroidered cushion cover

£120.00

This cushion is designed by Alexandra Tolstoy and Benedict Foley! The design is based traditional Syrian and Palestinian motifs representing trees and flowers.

This hand-embroidered cushion, featuring the iconic Cypress tree motif, is a heartfelt tribute to the ancient cultural heritage of the Levant. The Cypress tree, a symbol of eternity and long life, has long appeared in the region's textiles, ceramics, and wood carvings, representing resilience and strength throughout the centuries. For the Syrian and Palestinian refugee women artisans who create this piece, the design holds a deeply personal significance—it is not just a reflection of their cultural history, but also a connection to the homeland they were forced to leave. As they endure the trauma of displacement, once again fleeing their homes due to the ongoing attacks on Beirut, the act of embroidery offers them a space for healing and a way to preserve their traditions.

Each cushion is meticulously hand-embroidered with 100% natural wool, dyed with vegetable-based dyes, reflecting the traditional techniques passed down through generations. The artisans, through their craft, are not only honouring their past but also finding solace and a sense of purpose amidst their hardship. In creating this beautiful, meaningful design, they are re-establishing a link to their heritage, weaving their stories of resilience and hope into every stitch.
