Our Director Itab tells the story behind this vibrant hand-crocheted cushion.

“When I was growing up in southern Syria in the 1980s, crochet was a big thing. Most women knew how to crochet, and everyone’s homes were full of beautiful homemade pieces.

This cushion is based on one I remember my mum had, that must have been made in the 1970s. My mother’s name is Donia, which I’ve always thought is one of the most beautiful and expressive Arabic girls’ names; it means ‘world’. That’s why we named this one after her.”

The Donia cushion is handmade by Syrian refugee women in Lebanon. It not only brings in an income, but brings women who have lost everything together – knitting not only crochet, but a crucial community.

The Donia cushion works beautifully with the Fedwa as part of a pair, or stands alone in all its multicoloured glory.
