This cushion is based upon the predominantly Palestinian ‘tatreez’ motifs that we used in the embroidered poster we stitched for Glastonbury Festival's Park stage line-up poster 2024.
Palestinian tatreez (cross-stitch embroidery) is included in UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage not just because of the incredible skill involved in the craft, but because of the central place tatreez holds in the history of Palestine. For many generations, women have passed on the art of embroidery to their daughters, including teaching them particular stitches linked to place and identity.
You can read more about Palestinian embroidery and identity, over on the blog.
The doves, roosters, chickens, flowers and rabbits on the design are all based upon traditional embroidery motifs. We wanted to create a piece that recognised and celebrated this rich heritage at a time when it is most under threat.
All of the profits from sales of this cushion go to support the Palestinian refugee women from Syria that Oshana supports alongside their Syrian sisters. These women are all second and third generation refugees who fled Palestine in 1948. Producing tatreez for Oshana is not just a way of supporting their families, but a way of keeping a craft and an identity alive.
