This pattern reminds us of the checkered-tile courtyards, or Ard Addiyars, of old Damascus. At the heart of many of Damascus’ old houses you would find one of these oases. They are where life happened. Children played, visitors sat and smoked their pipes, chewing over neighbourhood gossip. Bougainvillea would provide colour, and roses and jasmine a sweet scent. These are the memories we have encapsulated in this design, memories which are kept alive by our extraordinarily talented and resilient artisans.

Our artisans are Syrian and Palestinian women who were forced to flee their homes due to the war, leaving everything behind. The women we work with now live in Lebanon, where there are no bombs, but where over 90% of refugees lack the money to buy enough food, according to the UN. With your help, Oshana provides a crucial and dignified income.
